NCHD’s Adult Literacy Program:

The Adult Literacy Program of NCHD was started in 2002. It is a key program which has been operational in 134 districts. Since 2002, NCHD has been able to:

  • Completed 164,190 Adult Literacy Centers
  • Made about 3.84 million adult learners literate

This is a direct outcome of NCHD’s efforts in mobilizing the female population in a bid to redress the imbalance in educational opportunities between men and women.

Recognizing the achievement of NCHD in field of literacy at the international level, the President of Pakistan has declared the NCHD as Lead Agency for Literacy at the national level. Accordingly, NCHD has planned the following activities being the lead agency:

i.   NCHD will act as Focal Point for Literacy under the aegis of Ministry of Education

ii.  Mapping of Literacy related interventions in Pakistan and publication of comprehensive Literacy Status Report

iii. Creation of National Literacy Data base- literacy status to be updated on a regular basis

iv.  Establish Literacy Resource Centres: one at the national level, four at provincial level- for capacity building of        stakeholders, technical support, research, monitoring assessment, and evaluation.

The strongest feature of the Adult Literacy Program is that the female learners (with 95%) outnumber male learners in all intervention districts, thereby, increasing the number of the female literacy centers. This is a direct consequence of NCHD’s efforts in mobilizing the female population in a bid to redress the imbalance in educational opportunities between men and women, and promote gender equity/empowerment.
