Director’s Message

IqbalUnfortunately Pakistan’s rank in HDI 145 out of 187 is very poor. Education indicators are also very poor, 58% literacy rate 57% net enrollment rate reflects the dismal situation of education in Pakistan. In this scenario non-formal education for provision of access to out of school children and imparting literacy skills to the huge segment of illiterate population is an inevitable requirement.
The programme of NCHD has been designed to facilitate the Federal as well as Provincial Governments to achieve the EFA goals, MDGs and national plan of action.
NCHD has adopted a two pronged strategy to raise the level of literacy in Pakistan.

  1. Universal Primary Education (UPE) for provision of access to out of school children and reduction in dropout.
  1. Country wide national literacy programe for eradication illiteracy through establishing adult literacy centers.

NCHD has been declared as lead agency in the field of literacy in Pakistan and also won international literacy award from UNESCO. Establishment of a state of the art National Literacy Resource Center is another feather to the cap of NCHD program.
National Literacy Resource Center has been established to implement innovative projects which may be replicated at scale. It is also worth mentioning that capacity development, research & development are the integral part of this resource center.
The major feature of resource center is to develop literacy material and modules for training on Adult Literacy as and when needed. Another objective is to support research activities in literacy. It is also aimed to support community organizations through capacity building.
The resource center has equipped with worthy resources like training manuals, modules, guides, handbooks, books, posters, leaflets, booklets, reports, brouchers, news bulletin, CDs, flash cards, learning aids etc.
I admire services and the hard work done by the members of NLRC and hope this website as well resource center will provide opportunities of the capacity building of literacy personnel’s in Pakistan. In the last I am hopeful that the public/private sector organizations & NGOs working in the field of literacy and non-formal education will be benefited from this resource center.

m.saeedThe major underlying issues in the field of adult literacy and non formal education in Pakistan is lack of trained human resource; lack of proper training for teachers and related staff. Keeping in view the issue, NCHD established National Literacy Resource Center in 2006 at Islamabad. The role of Literacy Resource Centre is the capacity building of literacy professional of NGOs / GOs for the promotion of literacy and Non-Formal Education.NCHD invites literacy organizations and professionals working in the field of literacy and non formal activities at grassroots level to get maximum benefit from this initiative. The team of highly trained Master Trainers is available for the capacity building and helping professionals and students in conducting research in literacy and non formal education.
